HSC_MAP: Research and Reference

My research focused on the different styles of illustrated maps and how they represent the layout of cities and the features within them to help me get a grasp of how to position the landmarks within Leeds to show topography and orientation best. Visually seeing how other people how overcome the same obstacle is very useful.

I picked a variety of different maps to reference from, and get inspiration, ones that would be similar to the art style I have in mind and ones that are as far from it.

Very simple, easy to follow.
Not over cluttered and complicated.

This is a great example of a map covering a large scale sizing down a city to fit. This is a great example of a map using landmarks to make navigating easier, using buildings on the corners of roads allows the user to have less chance of missing it.

Great art style, although

Although this map doesn't have much visual to it apart from the very few distinct monuments, it's very easy to navigate by eye because it's not cluttered. The colours helped reinforce where your eye looks too, the darker colours been where your eye is drawn too, with the help of the pastel blue.

This is an example of a map to small and cluttered. Although it is covering a nation.

Another map which is too cluttered, but on a smaller scale. Everyone Knows there's buildings around but where does the metro bring you out too. The buildings surrounding the subway entrances should be what are emphasised he most for a better design.

Not necessarily a guide to follow, but the design of this map very pleasing to me. It's just not very practical, it's confusing to follow.
